The Isabella Trust is a small Liverpool based charity which provides support to parents and carers of children with autistic spectrum condition (ASC) and sensory processing difficulties (SPD).
ASC is a lifelong developmental disability which affects the way a person communicates and interacts with others. SPD is difficulties in how a person receives and uses information via the senses which then makes it hard for them to function in daily life. Sensory perceptions of a person with ASC can cause them difficulty in processing sounds, sights and smells this can often result in the person becoming stressed or anxious and possibly feel physical pain. This can then result in the person with SPD exhibiting challenging behaviours. Many people who have ASC will also have SPD.
The Isabella Trust aim to raise awareness and provide information about the needs of children with ASC and SPD and the issues facing their families. We also aim to support families, parents and carers with access to information and advice that will directly address the needs of children with ASC and SPD.
The Isabella Trust currently provides short courses on the following:
We also provide regular support and advice appointments with a speech and language therapist and an occupational therapist and advanced practitioner in sensory integration. These appointments are free and open to anybody who feels they need some advice or support regarding communication and/or sensory issues.
In addition we provide communication resources such as visuals/ now and next boards/ timelines/ story boards etc.
We work closely with childrens centres, schools and other professionals and local organisations. We attend their organised events to provide information about our services.
